TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language has relevance where there is higher emphasis on American English. Certain universities and institutions in USA and Canada specially specify the need for TOEFL. This is also stipulated as a prerequisite in academic and research organizations in other parts of the world where the American or Canadian scientists or academicians are at the helm of affairs.

Paper based or Computer based TOEFL does not have a speaking section of its own. To overcome this limitation, ETS, the US based educational society holding this examination , has come up with internet based TOEFL which gains rapid popularity all over the world . In India, at present , TOEFL (iBT) alone is available. A certain amount of computer skill is unavoidable for TOEFL (iBT). Listening has more sections and longer duration in TOEFL. In the case of Reading there are more question patterns and a better and closer familiarity with the reading passages is a necessity. In Speaking and Writing there are integrated tasks over and above independent assignments.

IELTS contact TOEFL (iBT) can be done successfully only with computer aided practice. Use of standard soft wares and quality text books, as recommended by ETS, combined with professional guidance from experienced English language teachers can contribute significantly for producing good results. Integrated tasks demand more intensive and systematic training.
